The Evening Standard Magazine reports on the newest venture by former footballer Jamie Redknapp and his former popstar wife Louise (of girl band Eternal fame)- producing a glossy magazine aimed at tapping into a market they know- footballers and their WAGs.
Icon Magazine- ‘A Magazine For The Sporting Icon’ has Louise as the self-appointed fashion editor dreaming up shoots produced with an expensive selection of photographers, whilst Jamie conducts
interviews which are written up with the help of a football journalist.
Cover stars so far have included Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen and the World Cup Trophy- easy scores for the couple who have a wide array of celebrity friends to call on.
Icon Magazine is currently printing it’s fifth bimonthly issue and as ‘a consumer magazine for the most conspicuous consumers in the country’ it is now being bought by British Airways for all of it’s lounges and first-class cabins. The ES journalist sums it up very well- ‘It isn’t journalism … it is a
tight, glossy little pamphlet for a footballer- or indeed his wife- who
has no inclination to look elsewhere for what he should be doing,
eating, wearing, thinking’.
As any gossip magazine reader knows, Mr and Mrs Redknapp are in the upper echelons of the footballing hierarchy therefore their opinions on such matters are highly regarded, and from the success of their publication obviously well received. It will be interesting to watch the life-span of this magazine as there are only so many ‘favourite restaurants’ to report on, but so far it’s an impressive achievement- I bet the Beckhams wish they had thought of it first!
