People Tree Celebrates Many Happy Returns
Pioneering Fair Trade fashion brand People Tree is celebrating its 5th anniversary with many happy returns. Its annual sales now top £1m and are set to grow. But the people really celebrating the success of People Tree are the 5000+ people in the 55 Fair Trade Groups from 20 developing nations.
The representative of one group from Nepal will visit the UK this month to see the products they produce on sale in TopShop. Such is the quality of People Tree’s quality and design, that the company is gaining widespread accpetance on the high street. It is now in 100 Oxfam stores around the UK and has just gone on sale in Timberlands’s Regent Street Store.
Laxmi Shova, is the representative from Kumbeshwar Technical
School’s group of 450 women knitters suppling People Tree. She says she
is very exited and proud to be visiting the UK to see the products in
the stores here and adds, “For
people like me in Kathmandu and the surrounding villages, People Tree has helped us more than
double our income. Fair Trade empowers me, my family, my colleagues and
grass-roots women producers in my country, both economically and socially, and
means we can educate ourselves and our children.”
Of course People Tree’s customers also benefit from being able to
buy fashion with a clear conscience. Not only is it not from
sweatshops, but it is also produced with great concern for the
environment. People Tree is the first UK fashion brand to have both
Fair Trade and Soil Association accreditation.
Vogue Magazine suggests that fashionistas are becoming more ethical
consumers. ‘Fashions Growing Concisence is an article in this months
issue, and it features People Tree.
