Pic: London Paper Readership

London Papers

There are now at least three free newspapers in London, two of which compete directly with the paid-for Evening Standard. Everyone seems to be reading a paper in London. Seen on the Central Line, London during rush hour home.

  1. 4 if you include City AM. 5 if you include the impressive Friday only Sport magazine

  2. Free papers are having interesting effects. One is sharing, you leave the paper for the next reader, or even offer it. The Guardian looked at what impact they had on the business and found they had only lost 4000 readers. It hasnt cannibalised existing (serious) papers so much as brought on new readers. The only shame is that the papers are fairly rubbish. 9 out of 10 stories are very ‘daily mail’ (police, army, drugs war, terror, actress…) Not in a tabloid way either - they dont have that much personality. Still millions more reading some ‘news’ is a good thing?

  3. have you considered the environmental impact of the current freesheet war? Nearly 400,000 trees (that’s after recycled paper usage) are being felled every day in order to print the 1.5 million freesheet papers now being distributed around London. Not particularly good news me thinks, given our already under pressure resources
