I had interesting drinks today with a senior record industry executive who highlighted the battle over the coming year between the Performing Rights Society (PRS) and Myspace, You Tube et al….. over collection of fees due artists.
He says that the PRS who collects and distributes fees from shops, bars and anyone else who plays music and then distributes those fees back to the artists is now looking at the internet with a view to collection of performance fees. What makes this an interesting battle is that according to this executive it does not matter if the artist is signed to the PRS the very fact that music is being broadcast is enough (In English law) for the PRS to enforce collection of a broadcasting fee.
PSFK will look forward to seeing how this one develops in 2007 as its implications potentially could effect any website which plays music.
