The Times reports on the newest form of pop-up – the mobile art gallery. Founded by artist Lucy
Willow, In-transit is a white van that displays contemporary art in the back, parking in locations around Cornwall- “I love the idea of a space that can go anywhere, and box vans make a
lovely little white cube. I wanted it to be the chip van of the art
world.”
Initially not very sucessful among the sceptical public who are aware of the dangers of getting into an unmarked van, In-transit now links exhibitions by a mix of up-and-coming artists and more established names to larger art events and institutions, where
visitors are more ready to engage with it. With the freedom to use locations to add to the viewing experience, the idea has great potential for promoting a deeper understanding of the art and its meaning, encouraging a heightened involvement.
