Daylife Revisited

by Piers Fawkes

200701121027So, sometimes we forge that when we write about projects that behind them are people who’ve worked long and hard about them and that care about them a lot. One of these projects was Daylife which we praised and knocked at the same time. Hey, it was Friday, hangover day.

Anyway, Elizabeth Talerman, Shaun Abrahamson and Tom Tercek swung by the office yesterday to explain what Daylife is. You see, Daylife isn’t only Daylife.com. Daylife is a technology that gives people from around the world news from around the world. Daylife.com is an example of what it can do. What they want to do is offer their system to publishers and brands: they gather all the news headlines, profile them then offer you the data in the way you want to cut it.

Huffington Post uses it as a NewsRanker on their homepage to compare the popularity of people to events in the press. Treehugger uses Daylife to power their green index that looks at what green issues terms of gaining in popularity in the news. Probably the most interesting visual layout was the use in the Davos site.

The system could also allow people to create their own PDF newspaper set on their own terms.

Right now, they’re trialing the technology and demonstrating it on select sites but in the future they’ll also run a ad-revenue share system with publishers who use this system.

In 2007 Trends : The Widget & Branded Utility, we talked about the power of taking the web to the people and Daylife hopes to provide an engine that does just that. In fact, they want brands to work with their data to offer branded utilities - useful widgets and services for people.
