The LA Times has analyzed the record and merchandize sales of 2006 to find that the oldies like the Rolling Stones and Madonna are still firmly in control (whether we like it or now). Here’s the top 10:
- The Rolling Stones
- Tim McGraw/Faith Hill
- Rascal Flatts
- Kenny Chesney
- Madonna
- Barbra Streisand
- Celine Dionne
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Bon Jovi
- Nickelback
It’s worth going back to this article in mid-2006 in the New York Times that wondered whether the music industry’s concentration on money making oldies will take the industry to the grave .
The LA Times goes on to report:
The digital domain is becoming increasingly significant in the music industry, but so far, the additional revenue generated by sales of downloaded tracks and ring tones wouldn’t alter the results of the Ultimate Top 10, so we’re not factoring those in yet. But this year could be when that changes.
Would love to see someone do a comparison top 10 of artists with the most illegal downloads. Anyone got one?
