Inevitable extension of mass "pressure marketing". In the States, politicians now routinely disregard the zillions of identical e-mails they get from supposed constituents expressing outrage over particular issues.

These e-mails tend to be facilitated by larger pressure groups; all the offended citizen has to do is enter a ZIP code (to ensure the e-mail is sent to the right elected officials), a name, and then "click here".

In a recent case, one of the big networks is contesting an indecency fine from the FCC becaue of the 2,500 people who wrote to complain, it turned out NONE had actually watched the show in question! They were simply responding to a description of the obscenity (or lewdness, or whatever) they'd been fed by some right-wing group.

"Rent a demonstrator" is the next logical step. I wonder if it costs extra for the rented protester to cite talking points articulately on camera? In different languages? Is passion extra? Commitment? Real tears?
