Sweden’s Roundabout Dogs
Forget skinny jeans, the Swedes are already onto the next trend: random acts of scuplture. As reported on LifeIsCarbon, it all began with the Roundabout dog—a state-sanctioned piece of artwork (a dog) that was vandalized in its outdoor setting (a roundabout). The next day, another homemade dog was there in its place.
Apparently the animal wasn’t spayed or neutered (do they get the Price is Right in Sweden?) as shortly after, more dogs began popping up all over the country. Some did it to make a statement against the country’s uniformity, others as a stand against vandalism.
Whatever is inspiring people to make them, it became an absolute craze. There was even a site, www.rondellhund.se, devoted to tracking them. They have defined the trend as:
“Non-professionally produced sculptural art in the form of a dog or other animal made from any material which, often concealed by the darkness of the night, is placed in a public place, preferably in a roundabout.”
Now, the animals aren’t only multiplying, they are migrating. Dogs have turned up in London, Australia and Norway. Here, the first known sighting in America (via TeenDrama).
