Emos Are Evil
Are Emo kids evil? You decide by watching this local news from eerie old Devils Lake.
Watch how the reporter points to tongue-in-cheek sites as dangerous places teenagers visit and just wait for the pic of the board that shows kids how to cut themselves.

Cape Town’s Design Indaba
The Design Indaba, held annually in Cape Town, is the premier design event for South Africa, covering all bases from fashion and textiles to interiors, advertising and graphic design. The Indaba features a conference (which I missed – maybe next year) and expo which I did catch. The organizers have obviously gone out of their way to get a cross-section of SA creativity with work ranging from the high-end furniture you might see in Wallpaper to township influenced recycled art (which was frankly a lot more fun not to mention affordable).
I was impressed with the graphic design/illustration work coming out of Cape Town in particular. I used to really struggle to source creative work along these lines when I worked in the London – Cape Town has a plague of hipster graphic artists (and their day rate is roughly the hourly rate of UK designers! Thought for the day: outsource to Africa).

PSFK Conference Panel: Tamara Giltsoff With Marc Alt, Jill Fehrenbacher, Hemal Vasavada-Gill, Kirk Iwanowski

Maybe the most important panel at next Tuesday’s conference will be the discussion on eco-branding and greenwashing. Tamara Giltsoff of Live|Work and OZO Car leads a discussion to help brands understand how to approach green issues and communicate them better. Tamara will be joined by a wonderful panel including Marc Alt from MAP, Jill Fehrenbacher from Inhabitat blog, Hemal Vasavada-Gill of The Eightfold consultancy and Kirk Iwanowski of Sundance Channel (who are about to broadcast an intense series on green issues).

e-Petition Is A Dud
Last week we talked about the rise of consumer power - turns out the ePetition that 35,000 British citizens signed to stop legislation against public photography was not based on anything going through Parliament. In fact, it sounds like it was all started because of the paranoia of a photographer.
Maybe we’ll see mechanisms set up to check the validity of campaigns?

PSFK Conference Panel : Rob Schaltenbrand With Floyd Hayes, Kacy Coll, Darren Paul, Drew Neisser
Probably the most topical of the talks next Tuesday will be on the subject of guerrilla and outdoor marketing and where to draw the line between smart idea and urban spam. Rob Schaltenbrand who previously worked as Engagement Director at Converse will probe the subject with a number of professionals whose companies work touches upon the subject: Floyd Hayes of Cunning, Kacy Coll of Naked, Darren Paul of the Night Agency and Drew Neisser of Renegade.
‘Urban Spam or Smart Idea’ is an essential talk on one of the most important issues facing the advertising and marketing industry.

Stella bans size zero from her show
The London Paper reports that Stella McCartney has banned super-skinny models from her catwalk show tomorrow, prefering to showcase her designs on a more natural and healthy frame. Accepting only models that are a UK size 10 or 12 (US size 6 or 8), Stella apparently sent two girls home from the show’s casting session for being too thin. Good to see a designer finally stepping in and doing something about the issue rather than waiting for the fashion councils to dictate a solution, and well done to Stella for recognising the power of the positive publicity that this will bring her- i’ll bet her sales increase when women see that the clothes can look just as good on them as on the models.
