Blame Jonathan Ive.
It was space-age optimism coupled with plastics fabrication technology that drove it the first time around. Now it looks like it's mostly fashion driven, with a little late-stage techno-utopia thrown in.

1998 FOREVER!!!

What kills me is that with all this focus on neo-Sixties style cues, the Barbican -- the largest assemblage of actual British high-Sixties interior design in London -- languishes. When, oh when, will someone create a trust to care for its plexiglass chandeliers and its burnt-orange velvet furniture as lovingly as we care for National Trust estates?
