Thinking about your next big trip? Why not skip the flight and cut back on all those nasty carbon emissions left by airplanes and go the whole way overland? The New York Times recently featured three companies specializing in international overland packages; whether you’re seeking something long or short, ruff ‘n’ tuff or a little more upscale, there’s an eco-friendly overland vacation perfect for you.
Ozbus offers a 12-week, 20 country trip from London to Sydney with about half the nights spent camping for about $7,350.
Intrepid Travel is an Australian company offering a 130-day trip from Singapore to Paris called To the End of The World and Back. Traveling by bus, boat, rickshaws, trains and even elephants, this trip will set you back about $12,410.
Dragoman Overland offers a much shorter trip (25 days) from Mexico City to Antigua, called Temples to Tequila. The trip spends about 20% of the nights camping and includes jungle walks, cave diving and sea kayaking. The cost is about $450 a week.
