Microsoft Turns To Late Night Urban Spam To Save Zune

How to win friends and influence them: Last Saturday Night, Microsoft had the clever idea of parking a car with a “competition grade stereo system” in the Lower East Side and blast out a tune to bar goers and the residents of the neighborhood. It was 3am.

A local resident filmed the above video and has set up a complaint website. In an open letter to Microsoft he says:

“Microsoft, we personally feel that this obnoxious stunt makes you irrevocably responsible in providing restitution to all residents in the immediate vicinity.”

WAKE UP MICROSOFT

  1. “egregious display of noise terrorism”? give me a break. who lives at stanton and ludlow and complains about loud music on a saturday night? it’s practically bourbon street when max fish lets out. judging by the poor design of the website and the crappy copy, last seen in a draft of a high school model united nations resolution, this sounds like a cry for attention from zune. or the ultimate sign of the crybabyfication of new york.

  2. how bleak.

  3. Nick,

You’re right. Everything is ok here. No problems at all, let’s just all step aside.

After all, if a huge corporation wants to try out their indy cred by waking up a few losers who should know better than to live in a busy neighborhood, why should we care? Money talks and M$ft rocks.

Right. Give me a break Nick. Crawl back into your cube and put the headphones back on.

  4. Zeke–please post video of you “Say Anything” style in Redmond after you go to disrupt the work day of Microsoft employees.

Clearly it would suck to get woken up by bill gates’ hot rod. But I’m sure there are more pressing needs in parts of that community, i.e. a few blocks east, where there are still areas of low income housing and people have concerns like hot water and heat better suited for a shrill spokesperson.

If you really want to serve your community why not call attention to issues affecting the community? At least don’t incite the Internet to fabricate calls to 311 when there are real problems out there. People are losing sleep over much bigger things.

Oh, and may I recommend a standard pair of Bose In-Ear phones–they’re comfortable enough to sleep in and nullify the ‘egregious displays noise terrorism’ like car stereos, sidewalk cell phone hawkers, the guys that yell whilst handing out free papers near the subway in the morning and other forms of corporate ear drum sodomy.

  5. I’m with Nick, if it was and Ipod truck they’d be peeing themselves with how edgy their nabe is.

  6. This is one of the more interesting conversations out there.

Nick – from our perspective – it is a noisy neighborhood. But this was far and away from “normal” noise. This was shoot you out of bed noise, beyond anything that happens when our favorite bar Max Fish gets out. Mind you, nothing about the site implicates Max Fish.

Beyond this, even if the noise level was “normal” – when you look out and see what shook you from your sleep is a shiny Microsoft logo – you get a little livid.

We hope you can appreciate the perspective.
