Public Citizen Taps YouTube

Public Citizen Taps YouTube

By Allison Mooney on February 9, 2007

In the latest episode of "Boomers on YouTube," Ralph Nader’s non-profit, Public Citizen, posts a video on the dangers of some new birth control pills.

The video, which actually features a bubbly blond named Kate and Public Citizen staffers, is obviously meant to appeal to a younger generation. They also have a website called notmypill.org. Both highlight their concerns over third-generation birth control pills, desogestrel in particular, which apparently doubles the risk of blood clots.

The Youtube video follows one from Virgin America for its campaign to Let VA Fly, which starred its snow-capped CEO, Fred Reid. Both campaigns featured the new web 2.0 rally-the-troops trifecta: viral video + website + email petition. Effectiveness is yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, Nader himself was on the Daily Show Wednesday–another media outlet boomers use to get cool points. Though perhaps they should make sure to get a tutorial on talk-show etiquette beforehand. Bill Gates, who appeared on Monday’s show to plug Vista, practically bolted from the stage before they cut to commercial. The clip was pulled from YouTube (Comedy Central = Viacom, doh!), but you can see it here.
