As an avid surfer lifelong surfer i have to say that most surfers identify with the beach bum living in the van on beach and not some yuppie status seeker. This so called rise isn't really substantiated beyond a perception by the author about status. Most of those services cater to hardcore surfers who can surf 10ft Witches Rock type breaks and not your analyst weekend warrior. I think surfing has shed the Jeff Spicoli image to a degree, but hasnt established itself as a prestigous, rich sport.

Ross, good points. I have to agree. Maybe I should have clarified that the author is framing his argument on San Diego beaches. Not exactly the most representative. Spicoli is still one of my hereos...
