So the pictures are in from the Oscars, and the dresses are being analysed, debated and rated. Comments from this year’s selection focus on the elegance that everyone exuded, as actresses returned to old-school hollywood glamour with lashings of glitz.

Strapless or one-shoulder slinky dresses were the style du jour, with mermaid skirts and cascading trains making more than a couple of appearances. Diamonds were big, and fabrics and trims were  extravagant- Jennifer Lopez’s Marchesa dress was completed with an antique jewelled neckline, whilst Maggie Gyllenhaal in deep navy dress by Proenza Schouler displayed an extravagant feather hemline.

Soft pales and fleshy hues were favoured by many, though the dresses that stood out were those in metallic, silvery tones and rich blues favoured by the more adventurous celebrities. Hair was up in simple, elegant styles with soft waves framing many faces, whilst makeup was subtle with the focus on rich red lips.

There was little for fashion critics to complain about this year, though also nothing that broke the mold or really stood out. Even Hollywood’s most daring actress, Nicole Kidman, seems to be too bruised from the reviews of past attempts to go for anything very daring, though the striking red of her Balenciaga gown made sure she was noticed. It’s a shame that with so much to choose from, actresses are shying away from expressing creativity and originality in their choices and opting for such safe solutions.
