The Youngest, Least Understood, Most Dangerous New Media
Russell makes a good point against arguing that one form of media will destroy another, but here’s a solid post by Tomi outlining five unique elements of the mobile medium (Found via All About Mobile Life).
1. The mobile is personal.
2. The mobile is the first always-on mass media.
3. The mobile is the first always-carried mass media.
4. The mobile is the first mass media with a built-in payment mechanism.
5. Mobile uniquely offers the media audience the input tool, at the point of creative impulse.
While it’s probably a bit far-fetched that "mobile will supercede the internet," Tomi suggests interesting things we might see brands doing in the future, like geotagging, QR codes, mobile credit, etc.
The point is that mobile is on its way to becoming a platform with tremendous implications to our lives. And in order to make different forms of media work together effectively, we need to understand the unique advantages and disadvantages of each.
