Update: Martha is pissed.

Or she might be, we are just guessing. But the news broke that iVillage has launched a social network platform this week–something that marthastewart.com has been meaning to do for a year now (as we reported earlier today). While they did launch a more robust site, they are still lacking the must-have web app of the season.

iVillage’s "Connect" aims at the same women’s demographic as marthastewart.com. They are calling it "the social network for grown-ups," which sounds awfully similar to the buzz around LinkedIn late last year.

Speaking of LinkedIn, does anyone actually use it to network? When was the last time you checked it? The personal details that comprise SNS profiles seem to clash with the notion of a professional network. The generation it is targeting still values boundaries–at least when it comes to personal versus professional life. And face it, those personal nuggets are the draw of these networks. Since Connect functions in this social space, perhaps it will hold more appeal. Just be careful, ladies, your boss has web access too.

Inspiration to make things better.

  1. I check LinkedIn 2-3 times a day, actually. I introduce people regularly and add new people to network on a regular basis. I use it to keep in touch with my existing network and see who is changing jobs and so on. I use it like a contacts database to see who I know and who I should know if I’m traveling to a new city. I surf through my contacts to see if I know anyone that can help a colleague’s request for help. I’ve been a fairly satisfied user for a long time.

  2. Yeah, I use LinkedIn … but not for social purposes, purely for professional networking. Their regular updates are incredibly useful for learning who’s moved to where (or at least who’s finally updated their profile!).

  3. I am a regular at linkedin.com. It’s great to find contacts and just stay in touch with people’s careers. And I agree– it’s a purely professional networking area. Although certain limitations are frustrating– I still enjoy most benefits of linkedin.com

  4. We recently building social networking in 3d format soon will be available on net. It is amazing. http://www.webdesignnewyork.ws
