Open City

By Piers Fawkes on March 12, 2007

Last weekend we visited Open City, one of the events found on The Purple List. Open City features several of the high profile examples of culture-jamming that we feature on the site. The PR says:

Open City: Tools for Public Action is an exhibition documenting the ingenuity of graffiti writers, artists, protesters, pranksters and hackers reclaiming the public realm. By presenting the artifacts and tools of the artists, the exhibition offers a deeper look at the means and motivations of urban action and creativity. Open City hopes to inspire its audience to make their own tools for public action. To encourage community participation, a series of screenings, presentations and workshops exploring tool building, tactics and approaches to communication by any means necessary will occur at Eyebeam throughout the month-long exhibition.

Lots of interesting work from the likes of Graffiti Research Lab, Matthias Wermke and Krzysztof Wodiczko. The most interesting work was from the guys at Detroit’s Object Orange – work we’ve celebrated here before. You may not agree with all the activities that this show presents, but it’s an accurate snapshot of what’s happening today.
