We are awash with green at the moment, Earth Day may have just passed but the discussion and dialogue looks far from over. Last night PSFK went to see what the guys at LVHRD had to say about green.
The event featured a dialogue that took place amongst a group interested in green, similar to crowd you would find at a Green Drinks event, the engaged and the curious.
The event was hosted by Colin Beavan the blogger of No Impact Man. Colin spoke of his plans to reduce his carbon footprint by not using electricity, his family has already eliminated their use of packaged goods and public transportation. He’s methods may be extreme but his year long experiment has provided the opportunity for others to find their own balance.
The two speakers, Russell Robertson the founder of Hybrid Product Design + Dev, and Marci Zaroff, founder of Eco Fashion label Under the Canopy, spoke about their companies mission to not only promote and create sustainable products but their efforts to inform and engage people along the journey.
Russell took us through the whole design process of the staggering issues and concerns surrounding New Yorkers dependency on taxi’s, the average New Yorker uses 100 cabs a year. His redesign of the New York taxi would not only eliminate the overall pollution emitted but would address handicap accessibility, driver safety and would provide the rider with panoramic views of the city.
Marci’s fashion show highlighted her companies stance on creating stylish clothing that also happens to be organic. By choosing to create a product that is fashion forward as well as organic she has addressed the desires of a consumer who would like to remain fashionable while still being conscious.
The whole evening’s success was in the way it was presented, a dialogue and not a lecture. For this dialogue to be embraced and continue similar events need to look to the success of this event for inspiration.
