PSFK Conference Presentation: The Perfect Storm – Allan Chochinov

Has the ability of the web to share ideas forced a sudden shift towards the consumption of the idea of a product rather than a product itself? How does this impact design and product development?

About the speaker:

Allan Chochinov is a partner at Core77, a New York-based design network which supports the global design community through both online and offline initiatives. He serves as the editor-in-chief of Core77.com, one of the most widely read design websites in the world, and as strategist for Coroflot.com (design jobs and portfolios) and DesignDirectory.com (design firm database). Allan is introduced by PSFK’s Piers Fawkes.

We will be holding PSFK Conferences throughout the year. Register your interest for attending in London, Los Angeles and Shanghai.

  1. Interesting to me that Allan uses some of the same toaster images – probably from the same website – which I used in a corporate presentation back in 2000. And I showed the same progression – from beautiful to ugly. Only I also related this to manufacturing, marketing to niche social groups, and internet-enabled customization as well as product design. And I had a definitive conclusion about what I was showing: the assertion that we were about to witness a coming reversal and that rapid manufacturing technologies would herald a “return to craft” and open a whole avenue for branding.

I’m honestly not sure what Allan is saying in this presentation besides the fact he finds these things remarkable. That doesn’t help me very much.
