So, the first in an infrequent series of us wondering what ever happened about something we were reporting like crazy about not so long ago:
Remember Google Earth. That 3d program you downloaded and you could spin around the world and Target’s roof was a target and people were using Google Earth as a advergame and… then it all went quiet.

Google Earth is hanging out with the members of Velvet Revolver in the “It all seemed so promising and cool at first, but soon thereafter we kind of got bored with it” room.

I’ve seen it being used on quite a few tv programs lately, as a cheap way generating 3D maps, flyovers etc.

As jjprojects alludes, Google Earth is actually more omnipresent than ever. It’s worked its way into everything. Any self-respecting marketing/political/news presentation that involves geography uses Google Earth. It’s hard to beat free for the basic, and even the pro version is a rock-bottom $400.

200M install base. Tighter integration with Google Maps. The problem is with our short attention span, not the app.

It moved from the early adopters to the early majority and the PSFK set got bored. There have been great NYTimes and WSJ articles written on all the cool things being done with the app. Others have picked up where PSFK left off. ;-)
