As jjprojects alludes, Google Earth is actually more omnipresent than ever. It's worked its way into everything. Any self-respecting marketing/political/news presentation that involves geography uses Google Earth. It's hard to beat free for the basic, and even the pro version is a rock-bottom $400.

200M install base. Tighter integration with Google Maps. The problem is with our short attention span, not the app.

It moved from the early adopters to the early majority and the PSFK set got bored. There have been great NYTimes and WSJ articles written on all the cool things being done with the app. Others have picked up where PSFK left off. ;-)
