Whatever Happened To… WiFi Mobile Phones?

Remember when we were all forecasting the death of cellular networks and the triumph of phone manufacturers because of the future introduction of WiFi enabled mobile phones? What happened? The premise was that people were going to avoid using the cellular network when they were in a WiFi area.

We suppose that what’s happened is that free WiFi hasn’t rolled out as fast as any one wanted – we’re still huddling in cafes for WiFi when we thought it would be in the parks by now. And

Anyway, this thought was prompted by news from Vecosys that Nokia and Motorola are going to start selling phones with wireless WiMax technology… in 2008.

  1. T-Mobile will soon launch HotSpot@Home. It looks like a hybrid GSM/Wi-Fi service that utilizes home access points and the T-Mobile HotSpot service combined with the existing T-Mobile network. Check out http://www.theonlyphoneyouneed.com/ for more information. Seems like new handsets are the core of the product (since you can use your own existing home Wi-Fi network).

  3. Nokia has sponsored WiFi in five to ten parks in NYC, and hopefully WiMax will get to us soon enough. My wish is that the N95s inclusion of WiFi will spread to more devices once this becomes a widespread reality.
