Once again, the annual NYC design week kicks off with the pre-show over in Dumbo. Now five years old, BKLYN DESIGNS, New York’s only curated design show open to the trade and public. The show opens today and runs through Sunday.
This year the show expands to include 65 exhibitors, 30 of those are new to the show. Eleven exhibitors will be selling directly from the show in a new market area that will feature fashion and home accessories.
There are a number of events taking place in support of the show. Tonight at 8pm, the kick off party will be held at Design Within Reach on Montague Street.
Saturday powerHouse Arena (37 Main Street Dumbo) presents Metropolis Books – The Designer and The
Designed. Two very distinct voices will be heard at this reading/book
signing event: Akiko Busch will read from her acclaimed book, The Uncommon Life of
Common Objects, a personal analysis of the products we live with every
day.
Co-authors Kira Gould and Lance Hosey (both from William McDonough +
Partners) will read from their new book, Women in Green: Voices of Sustainable Design, quoting the women instrumental in creating
sustainable design as we know it. Susan S. Szenasy, Metropolis’s
editor in chief,
advisor on the Busch book and one of the voices in the Gould/Hosey book will engage the authors in conversation.
Saturday night, is the Art Meets Design Party at Forté Condominiums – 230 Ashland Pl. Tour Forté, the new Fort Greene tower by FXFOWLE Architects and check out the artists and galleries on display.
