Fashion Bloggers Unite in Berlin

By Guy Brighton on May 3, 2007

Natasha Binar, founder of the no.mad agency for Art and Fashion, hosted “Catwalk takes to the Street,” an exhibition of the work of several popular street style photographers.  It took place in the Create Berlin Showroom and featured photos from The Style Scout (Robert Cassidy and Luisa Kos, London) and StilinBerlin (Mary Scherpe and Benjamin Richter, Berlin).

Check out Modabot for video commentary from the bloggers themselves, talking about everything from photographic technique to what they look for in a subject, and the legal ramifications of shooting street style.

It’s extremely refreshing to see this kind of work displayed in gallery form.  The fashion world seems to be taking increasing notice of the upstart voices.  Recently, Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) displayed his work at a similar exhibition held at Collette in Paris.  As the popularity of these sites continue to rise, many more exhibitions are sure to be in the works.

Most refreshing of all are the attitudes, or lack thereof, hidden behind the lenses.  These photographers aren’t embedded in the traditional fashion world; they’re much more content with, and find greater inspiration in, shooting the 3rd row fashion show attendees ("real fans") than gawking at the overinflated celebrities in the front row.

"Everyone in fashion takes themselves very seriously…" says Binar, "I think that’s a mistake because it’s still the serving industry; it’s supposed to be fun!"  The event, she explains, served as an outlet for those interested in fashion and streetstyle to "connect; to be able to talk in real life."  By strengthening the fashion blogging community, she hopes to see more forward progress from the fledgling art form; certainly, so do we.
