This past week brought together numerous people in the design world to discuss and look at the future of home furnishings. Much has been written about ICFF and the mind boggling amount of events and parties celebrating all things design.
One of the standouts was a talk and show organized by o2-NYC, HauteGREEN was created as a showcase where green and good design collide. Products were showcased only after they had been approved by a panel of judges, Including Graham Hill of Treehugger. The design had to not only green but good, over 70 artists where featured from around the world.
The discussion on Sunday only brought home the importance of creating design that is not only labeled and marketed as green. The talk brought together some of the most recognized names in sustainable design, although few wish to be labeled that. Tejo Remy of Droog, Carlos Salgado of Scrapile and Sam Grawe of Dwell spoke of the changing perceptions and issues associated with reclaimed materials and the overall buzz that has been mounting around green design.
The panel spoke about how the design process is changing, in the past material’s were thought of secondary, this has shifted as more attention is being placed on the possibilities of what others deem waste. A table made of scraps of wood or a rug made of leftover fabric speak volumes about our growing concern and perception of what is waste and what is just good design.
