Central Saint Martins has been cranking out fashion superstars-to-be for less than 20 years and it seems there’s no stopping their students from making big waves in the Fashion world. Last Thursday, the upstarts had their chance to show their shine on the catwalks of the BA (Hons) graduate fashion show.
Pei-Ru Keh reports:
The 42 graduating students could clearly be divided
into three categories: the good, the really good and the mediocre. The
good included Kyoko Fukui who turned out beautifully knit dresses that
boasted all the structure and detail not usually associated with
knitwear. Also impressive was Kristin Yeung with an elegant collection
that combined loose, languid pleating with tuxedo-inspired features to
evoke a modern day Miss Haversham. The more mediocre collections
spanned anything from ill-fitting trousers and overly busy prints, to
t-shirts and leggings (seriously?) and an undulating, zipper-border
technique that was obviously taught in a class and taken on board by
too many students for my liking.
"Really good to mediocre" is a very inspiring scale for an "art" school. Sure CSM is a highly competitive institution, but this ain’t no Project Runway. These kids put their all into real passionate collections and their dedication and determination is evident in their work.
The CSM show is an excellent opportunity to gain major industry attention. The show receives many of the same attendees that a major label would lure in. We imagine the vibes are like pre-season baseball scouts, hunting for the next Derek Jeter of the fashion world. Keh points out,
First prize winner Jack Isenberg (see his design
above) fell into the really good category, flaunting couture-level
skills with a sophisticated collection developed around an intricate,
laser-cut floral motif. Effortlessly adapted in a variety of fabrics,
the cut-out pattern adorned the thighs of some blue leather trousers,
the back of a magenta wool coat and strategically placed on a
vase-shaped, sheer black dress. The beauty and quiet thought of his
designs was so apparent, I couldn’t help but wonder what it must be
like to be classmates with someone who has such obvious talent, and
what it’s like to be outshone by him. Undisputedly the most refined and
pure in design, it’ll be interesting to see what’s in store for him.
Judging by the response, he won’t be a starving artist very long; couture skills pay bills. Congratulations graduates, and best of luck.
