250 Fresh&Easy Stores To Open In 2008
The Telegraph posts news that Tesco plans to launch 250 Fresh&Easy stores after their first store opens in November 2007. That will contribute to a total of 450 stores the grocery group will own outside the UK by the end of that year. Tesco seem to be making a special effort to ‘go native’, the Telegraph reports:
Speaking on a visit to Seoul, Philip Clarke, Tesco’s director of international and IT, and a potential successor to Sir Terry, said the overseas expansion was pleasing but insisted the company was not preoccupied by the number of outlets it had.
“I don’t even think about the number of stores,” he said. “My brief is not to create Tesco in every market but to create the right Tesco.”
Referring to growing public opposition to multinational retailers in Thailand and India, where Tesco is keen to open, Mr Clarke said: “Tesco does not go where it is not needed.
“It sometimes goes where people don’t want it, but our stores there usually end up full of shoppers.”
