Each collection from Quentin and Claude drips with consistent inspiration. Two seasons ago, the San Franciscan duo sent us relaxing on the beach with sea vibes and nautical prints and fabrics. The African Journey themed collection dropped in the spring, showcasing natural elements inspired by the cradle of civilization. At Capsule, the team readies to push it to the next level. Designer Moises Chavez took some time to let us in on the next theme for Q&C.
PSFK: Why did you start designing?
Moises Chavez: I believed in the vision that I had. I knew there was a place in the market for Quentin and Claude.
How did you get involved with Capsule?
I was introduced to Capsule by a fan. A store that carries our collection and believes in our line.
What’s the inspiration/idea/theme behind this season?
We base each collection on a story that surrounds a “talisman” figure. Holiday is a Jekyll & Hyde, while our Spring 08 is based on a Mr.Ripley guy from the 50’s.
What would you be doing if you weren’t designing?
Probably gardening. But I would have to hold a full-time job, so I probably would be designing.
What do you usually turn to for inspiration?
Art history and photography, my friends, and music.
What other designers/artists (of any kind) do you admire and why?
Margiela, Dries, APC, Surface to Air, Kooning, David Hockney, and Van Gough, he was such a visionary.
What film/television has been inspiring you lately?
I love and already miss the Sopranos. I also love mock-documentaries and short stories. I’ve been wanting to see “Paris JeTaime”.
How does music influence your design process?
For me it’s about who listens to the music. They’re the real inspiration. They create the blueprint for fashion visionaires.
What kind of music would you say “fits” your brand, if any?
Classical, 80’s new wave synthesis and eclectic modern.
What are you listening to at the moment?
LCD Soundsystem, JR Brothers, Depeche Mode and Mika.
Where’s the most exciting music coming from right now and why?
I think Paris is brewing some new talent.
What was the last show you went to?
Steve Malkmus from Pavement.
If you could go back in time five years and give yourself some advice, what would it be?
Save Green, in all aspects!!
