Bowling has always maintained a steady level of niche popularity, with very little about the hobby having changed since its heyday in the 50s. But in the less than glamorous pastime, designers and entrepreneurs have found an opportunity to strike. Introducing VIP bowling: All Star Lanes in London and SM Bowling Center’s new alley for Manila’s Mall of Asia are two high-end bowling alleys that blend kitsch with class, adding an air of elitism to what is usually thought of as a populist sport. Stripped of their trashy charm, these new alleys feature decors suited for a luxury lounge or club, turning a Saturday at the neighborhood lanes into a night out on the town.
All Star Lanes is a far-cry from the stinky alleys of yesteryear; the private bowling club features stylish, red leather couches and a retro-style bar that feels more Dick Tracy than Big Lebowski. Supposedly, even Madonna has tried to bowl a strike here.
The Philippines have also entered the fold with a new 34-lane alley in Mall of Asia featuring disco lighting, mod chairs and brightly colored shoes and gutters for rolling in style. The Australian Architects EAT are the designers behind this bowling beauty, the same ones behind the SM Megamall alley also in Manila.
Not quite as chic but definitely not your local bowling dive, Strike Cupertino in California opened this past weekend, heralding the influx of luxury lanes closer to home. The 32-lane alley features 15 large plasma TVs, a video wall spanning the length of the entire alley, pricey American and Asian fusion fare and an extensive (expensive) list of beers, wines and spirits.
