The art-school gone mainstream with the popular television show Project Runway, Parsons The New School for Design, has announced the winner of its Inaugural Year Sustainable Design Review program. Caroline Pham created an energy-saving, stress-relieving lighting system to brighten up and beautify dark and dreary subway stations:
Caroline’s winning project uses fibre optics and sunlight collection panels to deliver sunlight to the subway, to illuminate windows and sitting areas with illustrations of natural and urban landscape intervention.
The program accepts submissions from any and every discipline including marketing, product design, policy, drama and music. The finalists in the competition came up with some pretty inventive ideas as well – mobile vending carts delivering healthy, clean food to urbanites, and an inexpensive rainwater harvesting canopy to “financially or environmentally disadvantaged communities”.
