NYC for one has had LED Walk/Don't Walk signs for several years now, and I believe traffic lights too. I suspect Engadget just covered a press release. LEDs are all over the place these days; the really tough engineering challenge is pure white LEDs for auto headlights (see Lexus LS600h and Audi R8 for first applications in production vehicles).
