Fashion Finds a Place in the House of God

Fashion Finds a Place in the House of God

By Orli Sharaby on August 12, 2007

In New York City the sidewalks double as public runways, and even an innocent trip to the bodega calls for a strategically planned outfit: You never know who you’re going to see. It sometimes seems that the only respite for weary fashionistas is their living room couch and (save for the eyes of God that are upon them) their house of worship.

Well, scratch that last one. At St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Avenue, thanks to the efforts of the Rev. Elizabeth Garnsey, church clerics are now leading prayer in beautiful bespoke vestments. According to the T, the New York Times Style Magazine:

The Rev. Elizabeth Garnsey…was tired of trying to find good-looking but affordable vestments…So Garnsey asked the textile designer John Robshaw, an old friend, to create a block-print silk, and coaxed Peter Hidalgo, an up-and-coming clothing designer she discovered at Linda Dresner’s shop, to sew it into altar wear.

That’s one less fashion victim in the house of God. Thank the lord!
