NYC’s Hot New Scene: The Bench

bench.jpg Where’s the spot to see and be seen in NYC on a Friday night? No, not in some dank speakeasy or steam tunnel-turned-discotheque - it’s on “The Bench,” an unremarkable resting spot (save for the herd of LastNightsPartyers surrounding it) right in front of the American Apparel on Houston and Orchard. Gawker drew our attention to an Observer article that tipped us off to the new hipster mecca. “The Bench” was founded by DJ Big Black Matt Goias, Ari Forman, and Fancy, whom Gawker qualifies as “Moby’s best friend.”As DJ Goias explained to the Observer, the inspiration for blowing up the bench as a the hot new spot came organically:

“…Sitting on this corner, we see all of the people that we would’ve seen if we went to those stupid places that we hate, and we could talk and smoke and fuck this, this is the shit right here. We were like, ‘Yo, wouldn’t it be funny if we made a flyer?…It’s almost like an art project/marketing thing…Like, I can make nothing at all the hot shit.”
