Last month Aquafina finally agreed to re label their water source after it was disclosed that the water came from the Missouri River. PepsiCo, the bottling giant has been quick to point out that their water is of a higher quality than tap water. Although how remains to be seen. For the most part the average consumer of the 15 Billion dollar water industry remains relatively clueless about the origins of most bottled water sources.
The issue of bottled water is a contentious one and the release of this information could possibly effect the 30 Billion water bottles consumed a year, as more and more negative attention is being placed on the issues surrounding our over consumption of plastic.
One school in St Louis has decided to take a stance against the bottling giant and has eliminated all bottled water machines from the school. Each of the 620 students will be given a water bottle and encouraged to use the water fountains. The Mayor of Salt Lake City has eliminated water bottles for the cities employees and provided coolers and fountains instead. And in San Francisco residents who sign an online pledge to stop using bottle water get a free stainless steel water container.
This issue remains far from watered down and will continue to be discussed in both small and large communities across the country in the months to come.

Great post! It’s about time we began exploring environmentally friendly alternatives to bottled water. NYC is currently running an advertising campaign to promote usage of their own TAP WATER! Frankly, the same people buying Fiji water are concerned with their carbon footprint. If we clearly added the true environmental impact of each consumer item to the label we would probably begin to see a number of shifts quite similar to those we’re seeing in the tobacco industry.
