Wannado City’s M-Lab: For Young Innovators

By Christine Huang on August 14, 2007

Wannado City is an amusement park for the curious kid – instead of rollercoasters and shoot-em-up games, this role-playing world offers children the chance to try out anything they “wanna do” – from making pizzas to playing doctor.

The Wannado world covers 140,000 square feet of the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise, Florida, and includes over 60 themed areas. The park also includes several larger venues, each with its own concentration. The Motorola-sponsored M-Lab is focused around innovation and invention – upon entering, children are given a white lab coat and transformed into an “M-Ventor.” Visitors are encouraged to work on a technology-based game and cooperate to solve a difficult problem. When they complete their task, a “Mission Accomplished” banner is unfurled.

M-Lab was designed in collaboration with Motorola and Gensler, a global design, planning and strategic consulting firm. While most of Wannado City has a cute, fairytale feel to it, the lab’s interior looks like a cross between the Star Trek Enterprise and a mad scientist’s den.
