crayon_fragrance.jpgDemeter Fragrance Library is a perfumery known for its wide selection of unique, true-to-life scents “that are drawn from memories to transport a person back to a special place or time” – like Dirt, Between the Sheets, Bonfire, and Pruning Shears, just to name a (very odd) few. Last year, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the beloved kids product, Demeter released a limited edition Play-Doh cologne; and in the same vein, the  company recently added another kindergarten favorite to its line: Crayon. The fragrance, as with most of Demeter’s scents, is available in cologne, shower gel, body oil, lotion, and room spray form.

Neuroscience experiments have proven that olfactory stimuli can conjure emotions and recollections from the past quicker than words, images, or sounds, and some advertisers are depending on this potency to promote TV shows, movies and new food products. Generally, these campaigns employ common, agreeable scents like fruit and baked goods – scents that most people know and like.  And while some people who purchase Demeter’s fragrances may actually enjoy the distinct scent of things like Glue, Dust, and Crayon, for the most part, the company’s line is not so much about pleasing the senses as it is about the places, moments, and people they remind us of. Demeter is in the business of selling nostalgia, something rarer and more valuable than a pleasant aroma.
