Floppy Disk Makes Comeback…Sort Of

by Joel Horowitz

Batch TotemThe band Batch Totem’s (alias for musician, Jonas Olesen) latest album, “Trunkeret & Ikonisk”, was released on the obscure 31/2″ floppy disk format. Heavily compressing 72 minutes of music onto the 1.44MB diskette severely degraded the sound quality, but that was Olesen’s original concept.

The idea is essentially to release an album on an almost obsolete medium that fits very well with the music on an aesthetical level,” says Olesen. “Secondly, the scope of the project is to use heavy compression as a feature that shapes the music, instead of a limitation that reduces sound quality.

We’re not entirely sure who will actually be able to listen to the album, mainly since almost all of our friends haven’t owned a floppy drive since 1987, but if anything at all, it makes for nice coffee talk.
