Socializing with Google Maps

by Christine Huang

Yesterday, Google announced the addition of user profiles to Google Maps, another step forward  in their effort to integrate their growing list of social tools and services. With the launch of Shared Stuff last month, users were able to create profiles and bookmark links, pictures, and documents to share with their friends and public. Now they can showcase their personalized maps, favorite spots and opinions on geotagged locations with their Google identity, too - and browse through others’ profiles as well.

While geotag-based SNSes are nothing new, Google Maps has the obvious advantage of being, well, Google, and having a strong, existing base of people who use one or more of their services.  But we’re curious to see how many of them will take the leap from casual Gmailers to members of what could become the biggest social network online.
