Backyard Radios in Berlin

by Matthias Weber (PSFK Hamburg)

backyardradio.jpgContrasting the trend towards Internet based radio and podcasting, Berlin’s Backyard Radio is all about handmade micro-FM transmissions. Funded by Germany’s Kulturstiftung des Bundes, a small group of micro-radio enthusiasts are trying to combine analogue and digital wireless media and relocate them into your urban environment.

According to their site:

Launching in October of 2007, three months of experimental radio will take place in Berlin and Brandenburg on a network of mini FM transmitters. Combining the best of digital and terrestrial technology, Berlin Backyard Radio brings together commissioned radio art, podcasts, streaming, and good old fashioned analogue broadcast in rarely realized form of participatory media: the public can tune in, join the production or even host a transmitter.

The movement has its roots in Japan and a similar project has emerged in New York as well.
