Jay-Z And Chasing History

by Piers Fawkes

Jay-Z gave a good interview on Charlie Rose the other day as he explained his approach and impact on music and his business spirit. If you can sit through Charlie’s dodgy questions (and the fact he tries to speak-all-street-like) it was interesting to hear Jay speak about Chasing History and the entrepreneurial spirit it represents (31m00s):

Jay-Z: We’re chasing history because at the end of the day, right, you do things to improve your situation, then you start making money, then you make money, then you get so far you don’t need the money. Then you do two things - you either give up and retire on an island somewhere, or you chase history…”

Charlie Rose: But what is ‘chasing history’? To do it better than anyone else has done it?

Jay Z: That’s right, to leave a legacy… to do it better than anyone has ever done it, to push the envelope, to do new and exciting things, to come up with things no one has ever heard of and get people to emulate you. All that type of thing. That’s chasing history.
