Muji Opens Today In NYC

By Dave Pinter on November 16, 2007

PSFK arrived early this morning for an advance opening of the first Muji shop in the US. Some Muji products have been available for a few years through the MOMA Design Store. The new 3000 sq.ft. location on Broadway in Soho makes available a wider selection of organizational products, furniture, cookwear, and clothing.

The space itself is minimally decorated. Tall perimeter shelving does a good job of presenting merchandise. Two large glass shelving units hold smaller items and are the big architectural character pieces in the space. There is a customizable pen display adjacent to the entry that is pretty cool. It allows you to mix and match pen components to your desire.

Muji’s core brand attribute is minimal branding. With regard to the store, there is one sign in the exterior. Interior singage is limited to simple, mostly black and white graphics.

The store opened to the public today at noon. We noticed some advance preparation for the crowds, like the temporary stanchions around the chechout. Overall though the store is bright, clean, and simple.
