   When it comes to music I am still subscribing and listening to a lot of Podcasts: To name a few East Village Radio has all their shows as Podcast Subscriptions online: Mark Ronsons’s Authentic Shit on Fridays, NY’s turntablelab Podcast or Wax Poetics Record Rundown etc.

   The Stones Throw podcast is still on my list aswell as the FADER mags Podcast that comes with a digital PDF version of their printed issue.

   SXSW has a nice series of audio podcasts from their conferences.

   The issue as always has to do with the marketing community overhyping something. As with blogs before, podcast is a label that the marketing and tech industries applied to audio/video downloads.

   People don’t read blogs, they read websites. Likewise, they don’t listen to or watch podcasts, they listen to or watch downloads.

   Personally, I love them.

   The Shoreham Electric Alliance is ace - if you like out-there electronic/D’n'b’B/Broken beats in a DIY stylee.

   I’ve also become addicted to iTuneU - blows my mind - a top flight education for free on my iPhone. Subway rides have (almost) become a joy - enriching, stimulating and rewarding.

   Check out the David Lynch/Berkeley seminar - a bit of a hard sell on the TM stuff but enjoyable non-the-less.

   I love living in the future - it’s miles better than I thought it would be.

   Podcast is an absolutely terrible word for it. That didn’t help. 13% is probably about right. But 13% of 1.5B people is you know, quite a bit.

   Pretty much all of my friends and colleagues listen to podcasts. One that I have recently been following is APRADIO, an bi/weekly podcast that features no talking, just straight music. It is part of a blog site called http://www.theaestheticpoetic.com The style of music is classic 1990-97 hip hop and the occasional mash up.

   Just because podcasting no longer enjoys the media darling status it once had, it doesn’t mean that it’s gone away by any means.

   In the end, it turned out to be just another media distribution channel, not the dawn of the new age or personal publishing, or the beginning of the end of traditional media, as one might have been led to believe. Henry’s right in that essentially podcasts are just downloadable media, however there is an important distinction in that podcasts are distributed via syndication and subscription (RSS, XML), so content is automatically downloaded to the users computer and/or portable device.

   Since the whole podcasting hype of 2005(?), there’s been a proliferation of podcasts by both independent and corporate media, but also an elevation of production quality to broadcast or near-broadcast levels.

   The comments above list several good examples of quality podcasts (I would be remiss by not mentioning the excellent podcast produced by Monocle, the magazine), and entire networks (revision 3, of digg fame is a notable example) have sprung up to provide quality subscription audio and video content for the ubiquitous portable media players or phones in everybody’s pocket or purse. Sure, the hype has died down, but podcasts (or branded media downloads) still remain a good way for people to experience a brand (or brand of content).

   , and with the near ubiquity of mp3 and video-enabled portable media players and mobile phones to play that content.

   Henry hit the nail on the head. Marketing and pr people love something to hype, their jobs depend on it. Podcasting is just another way to deliver content, not a replacement for radio, tv, internet, you tube, facebook etc etc etc

   I’ve spent most of my career making radio content, mainly for traditional broadcasters, but more recently some of this content has been delivered via the net. All clients want to call these online shows podcasts because of the so called buzz, but most of the time they are not podcasts, they are just donwloadable content.

   The more people focus on the technology, the more the content or story is likely to suffer. That’s not always true though, because a great grasp of technology and delivery methods can add to content. But, content should always come first.
