The world federation of consumer organizations, Consumers International (CI) have announced the winners of their International Bad Product Awards. Nominations were submitted by the 220 international consumer organizations that are members of the federation and the awards aim to “highlight failings of corporate responsibility and the abuse of consumer trust by internationally recognised brands.”
This year’s winners are:
Coca-Cola – for continuing the international marketing of its bottled water, Dasani, despite admitting it comes from the same sources as local tap water.
Kellogg’s – for the worldwide use of cartoon-type characters and product tie-ins aimed at children, despite high levels of sugar and salt in their food products.
Mattel – for stonewalling US congressional investigations and avoiding overall responsibility for the global recall of 21 million products.
With the overall prize going to:
Takeda Pharmaceuticals – for taking advantage of poor US regulation and advertising sleeping pills to children, despite health warnings about pediatric use.
Richard Lloyd, Director General of Consumers International, says:
“These multi-billion dollar companies are global brands with a responsibility to be honest, accountable and responsible. In highlighting their short-comings Consumers International and its 220 member organisations are holding corporations to account and demanding businesses take social responsibility seriously.”

Well, at least Coca-Cola have stopped all animal testing - including it’s vendors.

Dasani may come from the same sources as tap water, but it is filtered to purity. I think it tastes better than most other bottled waters. I would have issue with Dasani if it were marketed as natural spring water, or glacier ice water etc. it is not.
Its also not harmful in any way, so why this is some horrible product, I dont understand.
I’d take bigger issue with Coca Cola soft drink. Sugar and acids erode your teeth, increase your caloric intake and the phosphoric acid in it actively prevents absorption of calcium.

Dasani isn’t filtered, it’s just a marketing. In fact it’s one of the most effective marketing schemes ever created. Bottle regular tap water and mark up the price over 400%, then sell it to idiots like you who probably don’t even think to refill the bottle with your own water when you’re done. Heck, if you were to do so and compare, the tap water you put in to the bottle would probably taste IDENTICAL.
