arbest2007.jpgBusinessWeek and Architectural Record recently announced this year winners and finalists representing the best examples of architecture completed this year. The collaboration between the two publications aims to highlight examples of successful partnerships between architects and the business world.

While it’s too soon to call it a trend, a third of this years 10 winners and finalists are green projects, a significant rise in number from 2006. Specifically topping the list is the new Navy Federal Credit Union’s (NFCU) call center in Suitland, Maryland. The project received a LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. ASD Architects who designed the facility paid special attention to maintaining a high quality level of clean air in the interior. The firm implemented massive plantings of bamboo within the space to generate oxyagen. A nearly 400 foot long central interior wall is planted end to end.

Architectural Record has set up an online page containing photo slide shows and details of this years winners. As more large scale green projects are completed, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of weight these types of projects are given in determining what is considered great architecture in the future.
