New Art for Every Month: the Shift 2008 Calendar

by Christine Huang

shiftpic.jpgPSFK was happily spared any dull calendars this gift-giving season, which gives us good reason to buy Shift’s 2008 Calendar, a culmination of the winners of the Japanese art magazine’s annual competition to find some of the most promising artistic talents around the world. The Shift calendar competition first started in 2003, hoping to inspire new artists to put forth their best work and giving them the opportunity for discovery on an international level. For the 2008 calendar, 1793 artists from 45 countries submitted their work, with the 12 Shift liked best chosen to represent each month (and shown in an exhibition at a local Japanese gallery in December 2007). Shift considers the calendar “a little art book” of sorts - something we find a bit more inspiring than photographs of kittens in baskets or the New England coastline. Biographies and links to more works from the 12 featured artists can be found here, and you can purchase the calendar through PRINT’EM.
