Nokia’s Answer To Apple’s iPhone

by Joel Horowitz

nokia s60Apple’s iPhone revolutionized the way we thought about mobile technology…especially with its intuitive touchscreeen interface. In development, Apple patented every aspect of the proprietary technology, leaving little for other mobile-phone manufacturers to improve upon.
Six months after Apple filed for patents, Nokia filed for their own proprietary “Touch User Interface”, which like the iPhone, utilized much of the same technology. The ace-up-the-sleeve is Nokia’s other, very tight-lipped project – the Nokia S60 3D Touchless Device Control Interface.

To go beyond touch and create touchless 3D device control interface, Nokia decided to use Ultrasonic Transducers (USTs), arrayed around the perimeter of the display.
It’s a device control interface, that can track and recognize hand and finger movements in three dimensional space.

Yes, very Minority Report-esque. Who knows if this type of technology will actually make it to market. Then again, the ideas are sound. And besides, we all thought the iPhone was something implausibly futuristic when it was announced, didn’t we?
