Shop Dropping Anarchist Dolls

by Jeff Squires

anarchy-doll.png Oakland based artist Packard Jennings has created some hilarious anarchist dolls complete with molotov cocktails and bolt cutters and secretly slipped them into a handful of big box retailers around the San Francisco Bay Area.  Each Doll was hand crafted by Jennings with enough detail to throw almost any cashier for a loop.  At each location, they snuck the boxed toy inside and then brought it to the check out to try and purchase the thing, filming the entire ordeal.  The project’s larger philosophical goal, other than just screwing with folks and catching it on camera, was to demonstrate the ease at which a radical ideology such as anarchism can be commodified.

The doll, a full video with multiple store drops, and other new work by Packard will be on view at Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco from January 19th-March 1st, 2008.
