Matt Mason’s put together a nice slidecast in conjunction with the recent release of his book, The Pirate’s Dilemma: How Youth Culture is Reinventing Capitalism. The presentation is a good primer for the topic, offering a bit of interesting background on the history of piracy ‘n punk and how the ethos behind both has manifested – and serves as a stimulus for innovation and change – in media and culture today. Mason’s theory is compelling, and his experience as a former pirate radio DJ in London as well as a noted journalist has established him as an authority on the subject. View the slidecast below:

Interesting stuff. If you’re into this, you may want to pick up ‘Unmarketable’ by Anne Elizabeth Moore which I enjoyed and learnt from:
http://www.amazon.com/Unmarketable-Brandalism-Copyfighting-Mocketing-Integrity/dp/1595581685/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200517806&sr=1-1
Also, I don’t agree with one point form the slide show – he mentions graf writers have learnt to engage the viewer in the same way as advertisers. Erm, no they haven’t writers are all about ego almost 100% of the time.

I think this is a fantastic presentation and I will circulate it around to a few people at my office today. I think the most valuable point is that “If lawsuits are a part of your business model, than you really don’t have a business model” is a perfect articulation for the way things are going.
